Free phone, free internet, and almost nobody claims it
Millions of households pay every month for a line they could be getting at little or no cost. The money is set aside, the rules are written, and word never reaches them.
The program is Lifeline. Federal, legal, and run by the agency that regulates every carrier in the country.
What the benefit covers
- 📱 A smartphone delivered to your address, credit check not required
- 🌐 Monthly internet service at no charge
- 📞 Calls and texts without limits on participating carriers
- 💰 A discount of up to $9.25 on your phone or internet bill each month
- 🏕️ Up to $34.25 monthly for households living on Tribal lands
Nothing to sign. No fee waiting at the end of the month.
Odds are you already qualify
Enrollment in any one of these usually settles it:
- SNAP (food stamps)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance
- Medicaid
- Tribal assistance programs
- SSI
- Veterans Pension or Survivors Benefit
Income is the second door. A household earning at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Level qualifies on that basis alone.
Three steps to a working phone
- Confirm eligibility at LifelineSupport.org, the official portal. Under five minutes.
- Choose a provider serving your area. Many hand over a device at sign up.
- Get connected. The discount applies right away and the phone ships out.
Why so many leave it on the table
Some assume it is a scam because it sounds too generous. Others picture a pile of paperwork. Most never heard of it.
None of those reasons cost the government anything. They cost you a phone line.
What to do in the next five minutes
Open LifelineSupport.org and run the eligibility check. It is free, it takes minutes, and for many families it ends with a phone arriving within days.
Staying reachable for work, family and emergencies should not depend on what is left in the account.
Lifeline runs through USAC under FCC supervision. Each household receives one benefit, and eligibility must be recertified every year.
